FARMERS INSURANCE HAWAII ANNOUNCES WINNING TRAFFIC SAFETY JINGLE
HONOLULU – Farmers Insurance Hawaii today announced, in an unexpected but pleasant turn of events, not one, but two winners of the Farmers Insurance Hawaii Traffic Safety Jingle contest. The winners' lyrics will complete the traffic tune "Drive Safe" composed by ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro. The contest asked aspiring songwriters statewide to write lyrics to the composition to encourage and promote safe driving and pedestrian safety. During the final event at the Road Runner Music Hall at Dole Cannery, the judges Jake Shimabukuro, Michele Saito, president of Farmers Insurance Hawaii, and Taizo Braden, Traffic Reporter from Hawaii News Now, announced a tie for the grand prize. The two winning safety-inspired lyrics were written by Kirby Ai, from Honolulu, and Amanda, Angela and Anthony Frazier, from Aiea.
"We were extremely pleased with the exceptional video submissions from the public, the incorporation of traffic safety messages into the lyrics, and the excellent talent of all the entrants," said Michele Saito, president of Farmers Insurance Hawaii. "Improving traffic and pedestrian safety is the core initiative for Farmers Insurance Hawaii, and we are thrilled to see that so many people are joining us in the campaign to make Hawaii's streets safer for everyone. With the winning traffic safety song, we hope to popularize the tune so that everyone in Hawaii can keep traffic safety top of mind," said Saito.
Entrants were provided with sheet music and an MP3 of Shimabukuro's original composition to create a family friendly and creative video submission that encouraged safe driving or pedestrian safety. Nineteen videos were posted online at www.myfarmershawaii.com from May 11-June 7, where the public voted for their five favorite performances. The five finalists, Matthew Negele; Ryan Howe, Niki Tamashiro, and Colin Lazslo; Tearose Iosia; Amanda, Angela and Anthony Frazier; and Kirby Ai were then invited to perform for the grand prize at the Road Runner Music Hall at Dole Cannery where the overall winners were selected.
Kirby Ai and the Frazier family were both inspired to compose the traffic safety-themed lyrics because they wanted to create a catchy and fun song to spark awareness about driving and pedestrian safety. They will each receive a private 30-minute jam session with Shimabukuro and a $500 Apple Gift Card. Both of their lyrics will be used in the jingle to promote safety for drivers and pedestrians on Hawaii's streets through the creation of a traffic safety public service announcement.
Both winners were excited to be a part of the Farmers Insurance Hawaii's Traffic Safety Jingle contest. "It was a great opportunity to share my musical talent with the people of Hawaii, and a rewarding experience to take a role in raising awareness for traffic safety in a unique and fun way," said Kirby Ai. Amanda Frazier added, "We hope to hear people singing our jingle as they're walking down the street to remind themselves and others to always drive with aloha."
