FARMERS INSURANCE HAWAII URGES THE COMMUNITY TO PLEDGE TO SHARE THE ROAD WITH ALOHA FOR NATIONAL BIKE SAFETY MONTH

HONOLULU – Farmers Insurance Hawaii has partnered with the Hawaii Bicycling League to urge Hawaii drivers to pledge to make our roads safer for everyone. Farmers Hawaii kicks off the "Share The Road with Aloha" campaign today. The campaign encourages drivers to pledge and make a personal commitment to share the road with bicyclists. To help make the roads safer, drivers are asked when following a bicyclist, to pass slowly on the left and give at least 3 feet of space, and to allow a bicyclist full use of a lane per state law.

"May is National Bike Safety Month. In support of the Hawaii Bicycling League, we want to encourage Hawaii residents to share the road with aloha! Everyone has the right to be safe on Hawaii’s roads," said Michele Saito, president of Farmers Insurance Hawaii Operations. “Farmers Hawaii is asking drivers to pledge to make Hawaii’s roads safer for everyone, this includes motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists," said Saito.

"We are grateful that Farmers Hawaii has partnered with the Hawaii Bicycling League to help both drivers and bicyclists to be safe on the road. Safety is the mutual responsibility of all road users -- bicyclists, drivers, pedestrians. Please take the pledge and help us spread the word,” said Chad Taniguchi, executive director of the Hawaii Bicycling League.

The "Share The Road with Aloha" campaign aims to secure pledges from Hawaii drivers. For every pledge received, $1 will be donated by Farmers Hawaii to the Hawaii Bicycling League up to $1,000.

Residents can take the pledge by visiting www.myfarmershawaii.com/drivesafe, "liking" the Farmers Hawaii DriveSafe post of Facebook, or sending a tweet with the hashtag #drivesafehi.

The "Share the Road with Aloha" pledge is part of Farmers Hawaii's traffic safety program. Farmers Hawaii has been working with community members, non-profit organizations, schools, and the Honolulu Police Department for the past 10 years helping to encourage safe driving practices and raise community awareness of traffic safety issues.
