3rd ANNUAL "PROJECT SAVE OUR STREETS" RALLIES COMMUNITYWIDE SUPPORT TO HELP REDUCE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN 2013

Farmers Insurance Hawaii employees joined the Honolulu Police Department and the downtown community at the third annual "Project Save Our Streets" event this morning at the corner of King and Bishop Streets in downtown Honolulu. In 2010, HPD introduced "Project Save Our Streets" to address the record number of traffic accidents in our community.

More than 200 volunteers from downtown businesses, neighborhood watch and community groups joined in the sign waving event to remind drivers to follow speed limits, watch for pedestrians, and avoid driving distractions.

HPD officers handed out Pedestrian Safety pamphlets at this morning's event and encouraged drivers to pay special attention to pedestrian crossing signals at intersections in the congested downtown area.

In 2012, traffic fatalities on Oahu increased by 10 percent over the previous year, according to statistics compiled by HPD at year-end. Of the 57 traffic fatalities in 2012, 28 were speed related, up 75% over the previous year, while 16 involved motorcycles/mopeds and 15 involved pedestrians.

"Getting the message out about traffic and pedestrian safety remains vitally important. We believe traffic safety events like Project Save Our Streets and the Farmers Insurance Hot Spots can help make a difference," said Ann Nakagawa, Vice President of Farmers Insurance Hawaii. "We want to reduce traffic accidents by reminding drivers to obey the speed limit, watch for pedestrians crossing the streets, obey traffic laws, and avoid driving distractions," said Nakagawa.

The Farmers Insurance Hawaii Hot Spots program, in partnership with HPD, encourages safe driving practices and community awareness of traffic issues. Nakagawa said that the company's Hot Spots program started in 2002 in response to serious traffic accidents in front of school zones to help raise awareness for drivers to slow down and watch for pedestrians. Over the years the program has expanded to various hot spots in the community.
