FARMERS INSURANCE HAWAII TEAMS UP WITH LANAKILA MEALS ON WHEELS TO HELP FEED HAWAII'S KUPUNA

Farmers Insurance Hawaii has teamed up with Lanakila Meals on Wheels to help Hawaii seniors in need. Today, Farmers Insurance Hawaii employees sorted, packaged, and delivered donated food items for Lanakila's Grocery Delivery Program. Farmers Hawaii helped kick off the newly established program, which will provide non-perishable food items to over 200 seniors each month beyond the meal assistance they receive from the organization.

"Farmers Insurance Hawaii is committed to giving back to our community and helping our kupuna," said Michele Saito, president of Farmers Insurance Hawaii. "By the year 2020, one out of every four people in Hawaii will be 60 years or older. We are pleased to be able to partner with Lanakila Meals on Wheels for our 'Drive Out Hunger in Hawaii' campaign, and provide much needed assistance to seniors in need."

Lanakila Meals on Wheels is the state's largest and only island-wide meal provider for seniors, serving more than 250,000 meals a year. Lanakila's food services enable seniors to stay in their homes and avoid costly institutionalization. Delivering more than a nutritious meal, Lanakila Meals on Wheels provides nutrition education and counseling, monitors health and welfare, and serves as an important bridge to other service providers. Often times, Lanakila volunteers may be a senior’s only personal contact each day.

Farmers Insurance Hawaii has collected donations for Lanakila’s grocery delivery program through its "Drive Out Hunger in Hawaii" campaign. Through the end of September, Farmers Insurance Hawaii, in partnership with Lex Brodie’s Tire Company, Napa Auto Parts, University of Hawaii athletics department, and the Boy Scouts, will continue to collect non-perishable food and monetary donations to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank, River of Life Mission and Lanakila Meals on Wheels. Farmers Insurance Hawaii employees will also be volunteering their efforts at the various organizations. In addition to the food donation and volunteer help, Farmers Hawaii donated nearly $10,000 to Lanakila Meals on Wheels for new warming containers to keep food at the proper temperature while it is being delivered to seniors.

The campaign was planned to coincide with Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative held in September to raise awareness about the food crisis and motivate communities to work together to end hunger.

"We are excited to be working with Farmers Insurance Hawaii once again to work toward ending senior hunger, and thank them for their continuing support," said Marian Tsuji, president and chief executive officer of Lanakila Pacific. "Nearly one in three residents in Hawaii over the age of 60 are trying to make ends meet on an annual income of less than $10,000 a year. We struggle to keep up with the demand—our seniors need us more than ever."
