FREE COMMUNITY CHILD SEAT CHECKUP EVENT PRESENTED BY FARMERS INSURANCE HAWAII

Farmers Insurance Hawaii and the Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition want to help keep Hawaii's keiki safe. They are co-sponsoring a free community child safety seat checkup event at Shriners Hospital on Saturday, April 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Parents are invited to come out and take advantage of this free service and have their car seats checked for proper installation by certified trained technicians. Technicians will also answer questions about car seats, booster seats, and seat belt use. All car seats and booster seats will also be checked for recalls.

Automobile accidents are the number one cause of death among children and teens. More than 80% of car seats checked have one or more installation errors. Proper installation of car seats can significantly reduce serious injury during an accident.

"Raising traffic safety awareness and helping to keep our keiki safe is of utmost concern for Farmers Insurance Hawaii," said Michele Saito, president of Farmers Insurance Hawaii. As a parent myself, we may be unaware that our child's car seat is not installed correctly. By providing this community service, we're making it easier for parents to ensure the safety of their children and helping to keep our streets safer for our communities," said Saito.

The American Academy of Pediatrics last month released new guidelines stating that research clearly shows that children riding in rear-facing car seats until age 2 are five times safer than those who ride in forward-facing car seats.

According to Mike Meyer, a certified Child Passenger Safety instructor, "Rear-facing seats simply offer much better protection. Once children start facing forward in the vehicle, there is very little head and neck protection in the event of a crash or sudden stop."
