FARMERS INSURANCE HAWAII AND HAWAII BICYCLING LEAGUE EDUCATE 4th GRADERS ABOUT BICYCLE SAFETY THROUGH ADVENTURES IN TRAFFIC SAFETY ONLINE PROGRAM

Alvah Scott Elementary School students took to virtual streets today to learn important bicycle safety habits from Safety Officer Sam, an online cartoon superhero from Farmers Insurance Hawaii's Adventures in Traffic Safety program. Farmers Hawaii has partnered with the Hawaii Bicycling League to help educate students about bicycle riding safety by enhancing the curriculum of the Bicycling League's Bike Ed program with the online traffic safety video game.

Combining fun with a serious message, Farmers Hawaii's Adventures in Traffic Safety online program utilizes age-appropriate interactive activities and quizzes for grades K-6. Adventures in Traffic Safety was created to educate children at a young age about traffic safety to form good pedestrian and eventually good driving habits and practices. With upbeat music and video game graphics, Safety Officer Sam teaches students about bicycle and pedestrian safety practices, as well as vehicle passenger safety. The Web-based safety curriculum includes modules for crossing streets safely, correct seat belt usage, bicycle safety, knowing street signs and signals, obeying posted speed limits, and avoiding driving distractions.

Adventures in Traffic Safety is the state's first online traffic safety program locally produced by Farmers Hawaii for Hawaii’s elementary schools. As part of the partnership with the Hawaii Bicycling League, Farmers Hawaii expanded the bicycle safety module for 4th graders, which is now an integral part of the Bike Ed program starting this school year. Bike Ed instructors will be using Adventures in Traffic Safety to assist with classroom instruction at 80 schools on Oahu reaching approximately 8,000 4th grade students.

The Hawaii Bicycling League's Bike Ed program conducts week long instruction for bicycle riding safety for 4th grade students. Through classroom and on-street bicycle instruction, students learn how to ride a bike, proper usage of safety equipment and hand signals, as well as safety measures to use when riding on the street.

"Keeping our keiki safe, especially while riding bicycles on busy streets is a community-wide priority," said Melanie Joseph, marketing manager for Farmers Insurance Hawaii. "By reinforcing safety messages in a fun way, we can help to make our streets safer for our keiki."

Chad Taniguchi, executive director of the Hawaii Bicycling League, added that Adventures in Traffic Safety helps to reinforce bicycle safety messages in their Bike Ed program.

"We are pleased to partner with Farmers Insurance Hawaii to enhance and utilize Adventures in Traffic Safety as part of our Bike Ed curriculum. We think 4th graders can be more engaged through interactive and online programs that ask students to look at simulated situations on the streets, rather than paper tests, so we are excited to use Farmers Hawaii's Adventures in Traffic Safety as an instructional component for Bike Ed students. We thank Farmers Hawaii for including the BikeEd content in Adventures in Traffic Safety."

Adventures in Traffic Safety is part of the Farmers Hawaii Hot Spots Traffic Safety Program, created in 2002 in response to the growing public safety concerns of speeding in school zones.

Over 11,800 students have participated in Adventures in Traffic Safety since it launched in 2011. The interactive program is available to all elementary schools statewide at www.farmershotspots.com.
